Presentations:
A New View of Retail Wayfinding: Touch, Mobile, and Augmented Reality (Frog Design)
Katie Dill, Senior Interaction Designer, frogSF
This presentation of Intel’s Intelligent Digital Signage Proof-of-Concept explores how technology can enhance the consumer experience in a retail store. Using holographic glass, this sign provides an extraordinary glimpse of the retail environment: wayfinding and promotional information are presented to users in through an augmented reality view of the store. Touchscreen technology empowers users to view content that is relevant to them, while mobile integration allows users to send information from the sign to their mobile phone to consume at their own convenience.

Emotionally Engaging UX through the Marriage of Content and Experience (Wirestone)
David Kelley, Principal UX Architect, Wirestone.
In this case study we will look at a touch wall and how the ambient marriage of rich media content, multi-touch and targeted sound work together to engage with users and help shape community awareness through emotional connections with content.

Interactive Environments: the Difference Between an Impression and an Experience (Hornall Anderson)
Jamie Monberg, Chief Experience Officer Chris Monberg, Executive Producer Zak Menkel, Interactive Producer/Strategist
Hornall Anderson has recently been engaged in a number of large-scale environmental experiences, integrating interactive technology into environmental experiences. and will be presenting examples from the Empire State Building Sustainability Exhibit, the Madison Square Garden Sales Center, Microsoft CES 2010 Experience, and Various Prototypes from the Hornall Anderson Experience Lab (HAX)

This month we have User Experience Researcher Bob Edmiston presenting “Beyond the Line of Death,” a user data driven approach to feature prioritization.

Abstract:

During this abbreviated workshop, attendees will learn how to construct a weighted Persona x Scenario matrix applicable to any product. The end result is an enlightening perspective on what your market needs from your product. From this new perspective, features are determined and considered interdependent requirements necessary for the end-to-end scenario. The matrix helps to prioritize and guide every stage of the user centered design process.

Over the past 15 years, Bob has conducted user research at NASA-Ames Research Center, Apple Computer, Google, Microsoft and the University of Washington. Bob is currently consulting with the Office Unified Communcations group at Microsoft.

This month is our first in our IxDA/Interact Summer Series beyond touch with Steve Seow talking about: Touch and Beyond: Some things change and some things don’t. The psychology of future interactions.(http://www.stevenseow.com/ )

Abstract:
Some things change, and some things don’t. At Microsoft Surface, we have tested hundreds of users with countless design explorations and prototypes over the years. The design, the interaction model, the software and hardware technologies, and even the business have unavoidably and necessarily evolved, but in this dynamic multidimensional evolution, one factor stood as a constant—the psychology behind the core user interaction. We’ve pooled together years of quantitative and qualitative data, observation notes, and other information and distilled them down to a set of nine constants we called Surface Usability Maxims. These are what we believe hold true not just for Microsoft Surface and for touch computing, but also for any new interaction paradigm that may emerge in the future because… well, some things change, and some things don’t.

How can we design interactions that encourage specific behaviors?

A while back, LinkedIn experimented with a feature: a little meter above the users? information, showing their profile?s ?percentage completed.? Suddenly, more users filled out their profiles. The feature didn?t have a clever interface, a sophisticated information architecture, or show any technical prowess. It just leveraged basic human psychology.

As designers, we work hard to provide powerful features in our applications, but if users don?t take advantage, it?s all waste. We have to extend our designer?s toolkit, leveraging the latest thinking from behavioral economics, neuroscience, game mechanics, and rhetoric.

Stephen will guide you through specific examples of sites who?ve designed serendipity, arousal, rewards, and other seductive elements into their applications, especially during the post-signup period, when it?s so easy to lose people. He?ll demonstrate how to engage your users through a process of playful discovery, which is vital whether you make consumer applications or design for the corporate environment.

More about Stephen can be found on his site.
http://www.poetpainter.com/

Every third Wed this coming meeting is Wed, June 16th at 7:00 – 8:30pm at Aquent Office in Seattle. Free parking after 6:00 pm. Meeting in the lobby and look for our great new Sign. If you get lost call Eric at : 206.779.0314

Our meetings are always free.

This month its Nick Finck of Blue Flavor, who has spoken at SXSW, MIX, IA Summit and Refresh, will be presenting… this:

As our industry matures, we are starting to see a cataclysmic change in how we work within each of our fields. Information architecture, interaction design, visual design, usability, accessibility, content, and marketing are colliding to form a better and more valuable user experience.

Interaction is no longer an afterthought, overshadowed by visual design. “Just getting noticed” on the web is no longer sufficient – what you produce will now be judged by the value of your information and the ease of your experience. Today, users reign supreme.

Now’s the time to ask the tough questions: Are you properly investing resources, energy, and time in your user experience? Do you really, like really, know what your users want and need? How are you planning for the future?

In this presentation, we’ll explore the seven characteristics of good user experience, where technology and innovation are taking the interactive industry, and what milestones we’ll pass along the way.

What will I get of this session?
* A sense of where user experience is headed
* Knowledge of how context impacts the user experience
* An understanding of how new technologies are changing both context and user experience

Who should attend?
* User experience professionals
* Marketing executives and managers
* Online community managers
* Web designers and web developers
* Others who want to learn about user experience design

Nick Finck (www.nickfinck.com) is a user experience professional who has dabbled in the web for over a decade. He specializes in information architecture, interaction design, usability and user research.

Nick has created web experiences for Fortune 50 and 500 companies including Adobe, Boeing, Blue Cross / Blue Shield, Cisco, CitiGroup, FDIC, Harpo, HP, IBM, Microsoft, PBS, Peet’s Coffee, University of Denver, and others.

He lives and plays in Seattle, Washington, where he’s the Principal and Director of User Experience at Blue Flavor, a web design company that focuses on creating web experiences.
